Top Ten Seasons for Joss Whedon Shows

#10 - Dollhouse - Season 2


I debated whether or not to include Dollhouse, as to say that it’s the weakest Whedon show would be an incredible understatement.  That said, the quality of the nine ‘post cancellation’ episodes puts it on the list.  When the show stops running as story of the week, it’s awesome and exciting and just fun to watch.

#9 - Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Season 7


Season seven should have been better, but it’s still fantastic.  While the makers of the show didn’t get the impressive people to come back and play the First that they wanted (though Sarah Michelle Geller did a fine job, it just doesn’t work like it could have), and they seemed to miss a great chance at making the Ubervamps terrifying (as seen in ‘BOTN’ and ‘Showtime’), the season does a lot of things right.  The early going is very good, and the house full of potentials works surprisingly well, but the final five episodes really sees the show take off again.  Nathan Fillion is incredible and Caleb could be a strong season long villain on his own. Couple that with Faith and the exciting run to the finish, and the it’s wonderful. ( Now, if only they didn’t go out of their way to show that Buffy was right in ‘Empty Places’ when she is CLEARLY wrong and the other people are clearly right.)

#8 - Angel - Season 3

This is the point when Angel really, really got good.  Actually, that may have been Pylea, but still. :p  With season three came letterbox, focus, and a newfound willingness to take risks (no, Angel going ‘dark’ yet always saving the day for just a few weeks doesn’t count as risk-taking), and it’s wonderful.  From the early stages, to Darla’s return, to the awesome Loyalty story, to the horrible (and I mean that in a good way) end, Season three is outstanding.

Worst episode: Carpe Noctem

# 7 - Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Season 4

The show was as strong as ever moving to college, as season four of BtVS provides a textbook example of how to transition a show to from high school to college.  The first half of the season is absolutely insane, quality-wise, and Season four Spike is at the top of his game.  The season would place higher if not for a few issues in the second half, namely revolving around Adam and around the Initiative not being used as well.

Worst episode: Superstar

#6 - Angel - Season 4

I feel like it’s underrated.  Look, I know that it’s disjointed and running as a turgid supernatural soap-opera during season four, but I don’t care.  Season four of Angel is awesome.  There are some great moments, and as silly as the end of days stuff might be at times (the Sun’s been blotted out in all of Los Angeles and vampires reign on the town, yet nobody seems to care?  For that matter, the rest of the country, and world for that matter, didn’t notice LA fell to a Browncoat god who wants to serve man?), it’s all good because it’s exciting and the cast of characters is just so strong.  This style of show really seemed to fit Angel, imo.

Worst episode: Soulless (and I’m briefly explaining this one since I know it’s well liked.  I hate this premise and find it to be very, very boring.  Also, in later episodes when he’s ‘Angelus’, and I despise that term I might add, I’m annoyed at how he’s not shown killing anybody, only terrorizing or killing fellow demons.  WTF?)

#5 - Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Season 2

While the season is stellar from beginning to end, the season’s second half turns a great season into something more.  Season two, like passion, is the source of our finest moments (or at least moment, very late in the season finale) of the series, imo.

# 4 - Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Season 5

I have to place season five here.  It’s absolutely fantastic in, like, every way.  The Dawn plot shouldn’t work, but instead is great (at least after the first few episodes, when the seemed to find the character) and Glory makes for a great villain that is both funny and extremely intimidating.  This season also boasts a couple of the absolute best episodes of, well, any show ever made.

Worst Episode:  The Weight of the World

#3 - Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Season 3

This is BtVS at the top of its game.  From Faith and the Mayor to a wish and postponed episodes, no season of the show boasts such a consistent level of quality and such a great feel.  Season three is where it’s at.

Best episode: Enemies
Worst episode:  Dead Man’s Party

#2 - Angel - Season 5

For a show that improved literally every season, the jump in quality to its final season is still amazing.  The Wolfram & Hart setting works great and the characters and actors are at amazing points.  And there’s Illyria.  Who wouldn’t love Illyria?

Worst episode:  Soul Purpose

#1 - Firefly

For one shining half season, this may have been the greatest show ever made.  Its blend of, well, everything and its vision of this universe are amazing.  Oh, and what a perfect cast of characters, too boot.  And Serenity is the most incredible home setting.

Top Ten Current Generation Console Video Games

#10 - Alan Wake (2010 - XBOX 360)


The story is absolutely incredible and enthralling and all that, but that wouldn’t matter if the game wasn’t so much fun to play.  Personally, I cannot get tired of the gameplay mechanics, and seeing more of the story is a great reward for advancing.

#9 - Heavy Rain (2010 - PS3)


This game is one of the best experiences of this generation.  The characters and the story and the ways that the story can change based on actions make Heavy Rain one of the best and most unforgettable games of this generation.

#8 - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007 - PS3, XBOX 360)

This is the game that made the CoD series so popular, and love it or hate it, it’s hard to deny Modern Warfare’s place among the best games of this generation.  The controls are top notch, the action is incredible, and the campaign may be the best of any multiplayer-centric FPS this gen.  It’s just a wonderful, wonderful game.

# 7 - InFamous (2009 - PS3)


It has glitches, the open world could be more, um, open, and Cole McGrath is hard to connect to in this game, but the game has two major things things that make it a truly great game.  First, the gameplay and the powers are just awesome.  Second, this may well have the best story of this generation (well, after Bioshock).  Also, the final boss fight and game’s ending are as good as it gets.

#6 - New Super Mario Bros. (2009 - Wii)



I know, I know, I’m not saying Mario Galaxy games.  That’s because this game is just so incredible.  Not only are the levels expertly designed and the controls flawless, but the 2-4 player co-op is just so much fun.  Players can attack each other and laugh about it, or they can utilize teamwork to beat and master the levels (and it’s required for some star coins).  Maybe this game is ‘lazy’ work by Nintendo, as some claim, but it’s so fun that, really, who cares?  Few games are simply as much fun as this one.

#5 - Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (2009 - PS3)

Uncharted 2 has so much going for it: Great characters, beautiful graphics and settings, enthralling story, incredible platforming, and top notch third person shooting.  I can’t come up with anything negative to say about the game. Actually I do-it ends.

#4 - Portal (2007 - PS3 and XBOX 360)


Were I counting The Orange Box as a whole, then it would be higher, but I’m not, so Portal comes in a number 4.  It’s such a fun game and it’s so easy to get lost in the game for a few hours.  Not only is it insanely fun to play and think through the challenges, but it’s hard to find a better character than GlaDOS.

#3 - Red Dead Redemption (2010 - XBOX 360 and PS3)


Speaking of great playable characters, it’s hard to top John Marston.  However, the world of Red Dead is what makes this game so high on the list.  The world is very large and beautiful, and just riding on your horse never gets old when you’re riding across such a stunning landscape.  In addition, the side characters and the story and the gameplay are all just incredible as well.  It’s a near perfect game and well deserving on any ‘best games’ list.



#2 - Metal Gear Solid 4 (2008 - PS3)



This game is so stunning with its graphics, story, and certainly gameplay.  Rarely does one find a better game in terms of sheer gameplay than MGS4, and while it tends to be overshadowed by the story and insane amount of (albeit great) cutscenes, the gameplay and controls are what make Metal Gear Solid 4 the second best game of this generation.  Oh, and getting to play as the legendary Solid Snake could not be anything less than awesome.

#1 - Bioshock (2007 - Xbox 360, PS3)

Bioshock is, pretty much, the perfect video game.  The setting is astounding and so unbelievably immersible, the method of story telling is interesting and perfectly woven into the gameplay, and the characters are so enriched and interesting.  This game makes a strong case for not only best game of the generation, but best game of all time.
